Assam

Brahmaputra river

With the mighty River, the Brahmaputra as a living metaphor of the state of Assam and also the lifeline that defines the people, geography and its culture, Assam or Axom or ancient Pragjyotishpur as it was known in the Vedic age has much to offer to all who sets foot on its green miles. The archetypal Assam landscape is a patchwork of golden green rice fields and quintessential tea estates, bordered by the blue mountains of Arunachal Pradesh in the north and the highlands of Meghalaya and Nagaland to the south.

Serving as a gateway to the seven sister states, its lineage can be traced back to the writings of the Chinese traveller Huen Tseng, who visited India in the 7th century. Assam was ruled by the Tai Ahom clans from Myanmar for over 600 years in the 13thcentury. Vestiges of their reign dot the plains of Assam till date. It was during the British colonial rule that Assam found a geographical definition in the writings of Sir Edward Gait. Today Assam or Axom has its capital at Dispur and Guwahati is already a happening Metro city. A city that has learned to move with the times while still keeping its touch with its traditional roots, while quiet flows the Brahmaputra, a silent witness to the land and its people.
